Personal Statement

Thank you for your interest in my work.

Perhaps your life looks a lot like mine did. I had a successful career, loving wife and family, and all the trappings of American middle-class success. I had a nice house, cars to drive and took expensive vacations. I was active in my community and my church and had a very committed spiritual practice.

Yet, in spite of all of these indications of success and happiness, there was something missing, something that I just couldn't quite put my finger on that was waiting to be expressed. I felt a constant yearning to live another kind of life, a kind of life that I couldn't describe or picture in any outer way, yet knew in my heart was possible.

This yearning led me to take a personal journey. It was a journey that had components in the outer world, but mostly, it was an inward journey to soul.

What do I mean by "soul?" I think of soul as being the part of our being that holds that which is most essential. Soul is our uniqueness. It is the place in us where the purpose for our life meets the needs of the world.

Our one true gift to give, our purpose for being, is the source of our deepest yearning and it lies within our soul, waiting, aching, to be discovered, and then to be shared. We have all been placed on the Earth with our own unique and special purpose, our own song to sing, our own gift to give.

The journey that I took, and continue to take, is a journey that is as old as recorded history. As long as humans have been gathering together around fire circles, they have been telling stories of this journey. It is the journey of the hero.

The hero's journey is the story of our own personal journey to soul, to wholeness, to purpose. You too, can take this journey - in fact, you're already on it. Along the way, you have faced, and will continue to face, demons and dragons, knights in shining armor and damsels in distress. You will journey to strange and foreign lands, though you might never leave the comfort of your own living room. You will win many battles, and you will lose still more. Through it all, you will be pulled onward by the call of your quest, the pull of purpose, the yearning for meaning.

What we all need along the way are guides - people that have gone before us that can shine a little light into the dark places and help us to find our way. The way my purpose expresses in the world is to be an explorer of soul and a guide to others as they begin their own hero's journey.
